Album Review | Alexz Johnson’s ‘Voodoo’

April 2, 2010

If you check my last.fm, you’d see that Alexz Johnson happens to be my third most played artist overall. I absolutely love her voice and her music, and naturally I thought she could do no wrong… well that was until I heard Voodoo. This album mark’s Alexz Johnson’s debut as an official solo artist, okay that may sound a bit confusing to anyone not familiar with this Canadian songstress. Have you ever seen, or possibly heard of, the Canadian television show Instant Star? Well it was a series by the creators of Degrassi that starred Alexz as a winner of an Idol-like show, and as it chronicled her life after winning it also created real songs that went along with the series that were compiled on original soundtracks at the end of each season. While the show was mediocre at best, the music was kind of outstanding (esp. seasons 1+2). I’d easily recommend those albums, though I can’t say I’d recommend Voodoo. Now I know there were complications in starting her career after she quit the show seeing how her old label, Epic, dropped her and kept all of the masters of what should have been released (easily 10x better than anything on this album), but I just expected better. Aside from “Gonna Get It“, this album bounces back and forth between being a borefest to being just plain awful. Don’t let the amazing back catalogue or the amazing album cover fool you, Voodoo fails to be nothing more than a bad decision made by a brilliant artist.

Score: 2 out of 5

What Epic decided to keep in the divorce, and what should have been on her debut:

Chicago, Golden, Easy, Running With The Devil, and Swallowed. (there could be more, but these are the ones I know of)

All of the Epic masters are GENIUS, it’s sad that these aren’t being released… as far as I know.

Song of the Day: ‘Sweet Temptation (Hollow)’

February 27, 2009

Artist: Lillix

A bit of a flashback to 2006 today with ‘Sweet Temptation (Hollow)’! This is the lead single from Lillix‘s second album Inside The Hollow. They came up in my iTunes shuffle and a I thought I’d post this. Frankly this is the only genius song from their second album, the first one is incomparably better. I love this video and the beat to the song. Enjoy.

(Thought…. maybe next week I’ll do a song in a different language each day. hmmm….)

Song of the Day: ‘Mr. Therapy Man’

February 20, 2009

Artist: Justin Nozuka

20 year old Canadian/American singer-songwriter Justin Nozuka made his American debut last year with his first album Holly (listed as one of my favorite albums of 2008). I was lucky enough to see him last year in concert and it was amazing! I love his beautifully crafted lyrics and he puts so much emotion into every performance, both on the CD and live. ‘Mr. Therapy Man’ is my favorite song on his album, it’s just how he sings it that makes me love it so much (of course the fact that it has great lyrics too). I hope you enjoy it and as always feel free to leave me a comment and let me know what you think.

Song of the Day: ‘Chicago’

February 17, 2009

Artist: Alexz Johnson

She is one of my absolute favorite artists. Now you may have seen her before because she’s an actress too. Alexz has been in Final Destination 3, Smallville, and starred in Instant Star as the winner of a Canadian Idol like contest and every episode featured a new song. Instant Star was when I fell in love with her and her voice, the songs they featured are amazing even though the show itself kinda blowed. Now she is working on her solo album currently and has posted some of it’s tracks up on her myspace and ‘Chicago’ is my absolute favorite. I can’t wait for her to finish it.

My Favorite Albums of 2008

December 29, 2008

Adele – 19

The Grammy nominated UK singer gained a spot on my list with her debut album “19”. Track by track it’s loaded with soulful, jazzy, and pop-esque tunes that are beautifully crafted. She gives an amazing vocal performance, which is what truly makes this album one of the years best and strongest debuts. The must listen track to sample: “Melt My Heart To Stone”

Darin – Flashback

Back with his fourth and greatest release yet, Darin has blown me away with his new album that has more of a pop/r&b feel to it that keeps the tempo up through most all of the tracks giving it a great flow. I loved every single song on here, the vocals are the greatest they have ever been, and I can’t wait to see what he picks for a second single. A must listen track: “Strobelight”

Lady GaGa – The Fame

Yet another strong debut this year was by Lady Gaga. Her album was a brilliant collection of pop tunes sure to glam up any situation. Creatively and vocally impressive, “The Fame” is a must have! And for those that may have only heard “Just Dance”, it only gets better. The must listen: “Again Again”

Girls Aloud – Out of Control

The UK’s greatest girl group’s fifth studio album (sixth album overall) was one of their best yet. Debuting at number #1, this album has proved that the girls are staying on top! Their collection of songs on this album are brilliant and innovative. The girls are pop music at it’s best and I love them for it. “Out of Control” has shown how their music has matured, and showcases some of their best performances. The must listen track of the album: “Miss You Bow Wow”

Justin Nozuka – “Holly”

With his debut album, Justin Nozuka delivers amazing acoustic pop-soul-folk blend. This singer/songwritter has created an array of tracks with lyrics that really make the songs. Sometimes they are deep emotional tell alls and others are brilliant upbeat pieces, both done with such great intensity. A must listen track: “Mr. Therapy Man”.

LATE ADDITIONS:

Maria Mena – “Cause and Effect”: My fault, I haven’t had time to listen to it prior to making this list but it is well deserving. Maria Mena has crafted a lyrically and vocally stunning collection of songs for this album, each filled with sincere emotion. It’s definitely not on the lighter side. It’s good to listen to to work out problems of your own. I recommend at least checking out: “Power Trip Ballad” & “I Was Made For Loving You”.

The Saturdays – “Chasing Lights”: The debut album from Britain’s latest girl group is a strong start for a very talented collection of singers. They most certainly gained their own sound admist the girl group powerhouses Girls Aloud and the Sugababes. Racking up a hit singles left and right, these girls are proving they are here to stay. Must Listen Track: “Fall”.

Wow picking the must listen track for each was really hard because each album has so many stellar tracks its unbelievably hard to pick just one. 2008 Brought both strong debuts and brilliant vocals from all on this list. I hope this turns your ear to these gifted artist and also to hear some of the best music 2008 has to offer. Comment and let me know what you think.
